Education & Training
Before becoming a specialist in disaster medicine you will need all of the following requirements:
- 4 years of Medical School
- Residency in a medical/surgical specialty
- Specialized training and certification program in disaster medicine
- Training in a classroom, the field and disaster deployments
- Becoming experts in medical assessments of a disaster victim
- Learn to manage resources
- Learn to coordinate care and communicate with the response team
- Basic knowledge of National Incident Management System & Command System
- Importance of safety in disaster responses
- Principles of triage in a disaster setting
- Clinical competence to give effective care with limited resources
- Understanding of psychological First Aid and caring for respondents
- Proof that the physicians have mastered the main requirements to lead in a disaster response
Working Conditions, Skills, Duties & Equipment
The working conditions are very dangerous every time the physicians and doctors go out in the field. The conditions are as follows:
Over all these people aim to minimize casualties from the incidents by getting to the cite if incidents quickly. They must also work under a large amount of pressure which also takes a lot of patience but they must also be quick too.
- Difficult & Stressful
- Non-sterile, dirty and chaotic environments
- Long days and many experience sleep deprivation
- Must feel comfortable with getting their hand dirty
- Will make life or death choices on the spot
